Jeremy Brett is my favourite, a few others not yet mentioned are Peter Cushing (very good and under-rated actor, but too old (and small)for the part), Peter Cook (comedy take on the part, not succesful!), Stewart Granger (too old and wrong physique), Ian Richardson (again too old by the time he got to play it)

Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce are Holmes and Watson.
