The original 30's All Quiet On The Western Front. It's unforgettable in it's gritty depiction of the horrors of war.

Hell Is For Heroes gets an honorable mention as a quirky low budget flick with a lot of big names who were just starting out..

Das Boot.

Though not fitting a movie plot or drama, the Ken Burns documentary on the Civil War is excellent.
