If your desire is to play a fair chess game.......well I will let you all
figure it out for yourselves (after all, this is supposed to be a chess
topics forum. Hschmidt will complain if you merely exercise your right
to claim a win if he times out. My 2 games with him were 14 day per
move time outs which in my opinion allow plenty of time (even during
the holidays). Should you play him and claim the win, he will flood you
with email and try to provoke you into saying something out of anger
that he will use against you at a later date!
It seems you where within your rights to time this player out. I
understand his dissatifation with your decision, but you where under
no obligation to accommodate him under existing rules, though it
would have been a nice gesture.
Rather, Mr Hschmidt would do better to make a suggestion to RHP
about providing a "vacation" option that would permit his games to be
suspended for a set period of time (one to three weeks being
normal) , and so, take the time-out decision away from any
opponents. The vacation option could be something agreed to at the
start of a new game.
It is not a perfect system - we are going to implement some form for
vacation system, which, like you say, will allow players to agree before
hand that they can have a certain number of "vacation" periods where
the move timeout period is temporarily extended. I apologise for not
implementing this sooner.
Thanks,
Chris
Sorry Chris,
I did not mean to imply that you should have foreseen this situation!
I just wanted to point out that Mr Hschmidt had a fine opportunity to
make a suggestion so that his experience could benefit other players
finding themselves in the same position.
Most persons, whether on vacation or not, could have made moves
within the 14 day move period that was agreed to between these
players. However, those who actually travel may not have access to a
computer and the Internet; so the option to suspend games would be
a nice feature of RHP.
This idea you have of "holiday extensions" Chris, is fine (although
arguably unnecessary) so long as it is implemented (as you
mentioned) only upon agreement beforehand by the two players.
Though I suspect you will still receive complaints from a certain
element of player here who will simply not be content to adhere to the
rules (as liberal as they may become).
