dangit! I saw the title of this thread, and thinking that you were going to start a discussion about the eerily Orwellian feel of recent world events, I eagerly openend it, only to find a thread about yet another "reality" TV show I've never seen because I've got cable with 3 24 hour sports channels. πŸ˜‰

Why are there so many of these shows now? Have the networks decided they're tired of paying actors and writers?

You are exactly right.
Compared to the costs of paying scriptwriters, actors and all kinds of stuff, they stick the camera on a bunch of nobodies and go and have a cup of tea.

That's exactly right, Rich. There's a big, how shall I say, "hoo-haw" in the Screen Actors Guild about this. Networks love these shows because they're SO popular and require little overhead and virtually zero costs in actors. The unemplyment rate amongst TV actors has increased something like 12% since Survivor debuted (can't remember where I read that). So the actors dues have increased, but they're generally unable to pay them due to less work.

Have you guys heard of the new reality show that starts next week? It's sort of NBC's response to Joe Millionaire. They have a bunch of hotties vying for the Requisite Chiseled Dude, but this time, the woman wins a million dollars if he picks her to be his mate (lots of pronouns with bad antecedents...sorry!). And Requisite Chiseled Dude doesn't know it. Truly, we live in a marvelous age.

There's a lot of them yes...
We've had our own 2 BB's and now they've designed Big Brother Africa - groundbraking stuff πŸ˜‰

Did anyone see that 'Great TV reality show swindle' - I think it was on Channel 4 in the UK? It screened in SA as well. Pretty funny.

This guy, Nick Russian, tricked a group of people into thinking they were gonna be in a reality TV show for a year.
Everyone sold their stuff like apartments etc., quit their jobs, broke up with girl/boyfriends and said goodbye to family.
When they got together they found out that in this 'show', that only employed amatuer cameramen using their own equipment and who were not paid anything because this would be their big break, wasn't really what they expected.
They were broken up into groups and told that they had to make a million pounds.
None of the promises made to them was actually true, no accomodation, food or fame.

This was the show - no joke....

The 'contestants' then figured out that this guy didn't actually have a show, but was going to film them in their task and then sell this footage to a news network.

Needless to say they were a bit disappointed.

I just saw one previewed which was like The Bachelor, but with 12 (or something) guys vying for another guy!
The twist is some of the guys are straight actors...

I simply cannot begin to tell you how much I am looking forward to that program. It will be great. By the way, I'm straight. No really I am. Kirk

The big brother in australia has a live feed, starting from 12 or something like that. You can sit there watching live footage of a bunch of people you don't know brushing their teeth, snoring, or even....wait for it....reading!!!

Luckily their not getting huge audiences this year, which kind of restores my faith in humanity.

But what really blew me away about this live feed is it isn't highlights etc, just live feed for a few hours of a bunch of people sleeping, and perhaps one bloke reading a book.
