I woke up this morning and my head was about the size of a basketball, stomach was like a volcano and had some red blotches on my face. I am now told i have an allergy to shellfish and shouldn't eat shrimp, lobster or crab anymor: which is what i had for dinner last night. I don't want to give this stuff up, i love shellfish. anyone know about this stuff, should i listen to them and not eat it anymore??! how can i know for sure thats what it is??!

There are tofu fish like substitutes to be found which, I believe, also taste like fish or crab and such. Not only might this be better suited for an allergy, they are healthier and animal friendlier too!

Try other foods for something to like. Some more unusual meats perhaps.

Is there a single example of a substitute food (especially for a meat) which even comes close to what it is used as a replacement for?

If it tasted nice, it'd have already been eaten for its own sake.

Did they do any tests? Sometimes these allergies can be very specific, e.g. you might be allergic to shrimp, but not crab. But don't try to figure it out yourself, your reaction might be even worse next time. If you really have an allergy against that stuff, it shouldn't be taken lightly, and you'll have to avoid even small amounts.

Don't listen to them. In fact... I would recommend eating as much shelfish as you possibly can.

Always remember: whatever doesn't kill you, can only make you stronger.

If you've eaten it all before I find it odd that it would be that. May'be it was something else you ate last night. But get it checked out properly as reactions to things often get worse and they can be fatal.

Did you perhaps have ten pints of export strength lager with your meal?

You can get allergic to something at any point in your life.

If you get a strong allergic reaction, don't have any medicines with you and can't get an ambulance quickly, yes.

I've been told that a shellfish allergy is often not a shellfish allergy at all, but an allergy to a preservative used in frozen shellfish products. As I do not suffer from this allergy I havn't investigated this claim further, and hereby release release myself from any liability associated with taking my anecdotal claim as sound medical advice. Best of luck.

He is right, it could very well be other stuff than the shellfish. Allergies against stuff like preservatives are quite common, although a shellfish allergy isn't uncommon either. Get it checked out.

Will there be shellfish served at the funeral?

There was a program on in Britain a while ago about allergies - one of the methods currently being tested in the USA to temper the reaction is to grow a certain kind of worm in your stomach. The worms breed and have a dampening effect on the immune system, thus alleviating the allergic symptoms. Best of all, you get live worms in your poo. 🙂
