BIOS flashing

Heeelp. I've got a PC with a BIOS that needs flashing. Problem is, I can't find the BIOS string, the code bit that tells you what version it is. It should be, as far as I know, located in the bottom left hand side of the screen when you boot up, but it's not there. Any ideas where I might be able to find it?
