A small town in France 150 Km North of Paris called Bapaulme. Young , stupid and naively thinking that the weather would be nice in France in March, we got stranded there whilst hitchhiking. It was a prison town. Steel shutters on just about every window, even houses, and graffiti every where for example 'abhor les arabs'. It took us the whole night to get out of that place and I'm not going back. Ps i forgot to mention the abatoir. Lovely
Ok, this isn't the bleakest place (mainly because I have family living there), but rather being in this place during a very bleak era.
I was in Trinidad (west indies) during an attempted coup d'ètat back in 1990. At the time we were forced into a curfew. Being out after 9pm would have likely to have caused you to be shot on site. Wasn't very nice!
It also caused our flights to be grounded back to the UK and we were stuck there for an extra 2 weeks. I was 17 and in the middle of my A-Levels at the time although I did have a good excuse for late coursework.
To top it all off, there was a flu epidemic which the locals named "Bakr flu" (after Yasin Abu Bakr who led the insurgents).
Did a search about the incident and you can read about it here:

Oh yeah , you reminded me ...Gary , Indiana . If they were going to give North America an enima , that's where the insertion would take place .
