Have you ever started a highly recommended book, only to find it's simply a bit over your head? It's rather humiliating. 2 that fit that category for me are:
Thinking Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman - This is a deep dive into the subject of when we should (and should not) trust our instincts.
Meditations by Marcus Aurelius - The private journals of this Roman emperor focus on Stoicism, morality, and rational thinking.
Please share with us the books that have left you feeling a bit weak in the intellect department, and you'll have my eternal sympathy. 😕
@mchill
Happens all the time... 🙂 Not really but only because I pick books that are recommended by people like myself.
I enjoy John Le Carré's novels but I must admit I don't really understand all that is going on unless I read them a few times and watch the film, if there is one. Still I love his way of writing. To name one, e.g. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
@mchill
Even though I proud myself with a betrter than average knowledge in physics I was overwhelmed by Brian Green's The elegant universe.
@Ponderable saidShouldn’t you be calling for this to be in the Culture forum?

@divegeester saidThat would also be a good place for the dicussion.

So which book did make you feel stupid?
@divegeester saidI'm grateful for any interesting topic.

@mchill saidI’ve never felt “stupid” or “humiliated” by reading a book that seems to be a strange emotive response.

However I have found my self reading some books which are over my head. A Brief History of Time for example; I got to page 26 or so before having to put it down.
@mchill saidThe Apocryphal and Pseudo graphical Books of the Bible that were left out of modern bibles. They are real eyeopeners and turns lots of bible doctrines upside down.

roll me a fatty instead
in 1993 i took some night courses at the community college
technical they were, hydraulics, pneumatics, motor controls, welding, machining
i aced all of them
i'd been an industrial mechanic for ten years at that point
but hoo boy did i feel dumb when i picked up the textbook for the Intro To The National Electric Code 101
the textbook was The National Electric Code, 1993
the national electric code is authored by the National Association of Firefighters
because they have to rectify all the dumb mistakes that electricians make
the text covers everything concerning the control of electricity in any application
the course was not there for budding electricians to learn and memorize
oh no
that particular textbook (handbook, tech manual) is updated every three years and it only weighs about 60kg
the course was intended to teach how to reference any particular section of the book so as to not kill anyone with a mistake
think briefly about underwater lights in a swimming pool
yeah, folks aren't to happy about floating kids
anywho, i got straight A's in all my classes except for National Electric Code
i got a B+
side note
never touch a screwdriver to a live 440V terminal
bright blue lights ensue
did not need a book.
took out a blank piece of paper.
was going to write the great american novel.
finished it.
the publisher only offered me a few million.
felt really stupid for wasting my time for just a few million.
went back to watching "the view".....so more stimulating and a better way to find creative time.
@divegeester saidPassive-aggressive telling people what to do is "harmless people watching".
Me also; I was just interested to note how Ponderable didn’t exercise his office of forum content police which he usually does when he feels my threads are in the wrong forum. I enjoy noticing stuff like this; harmless people watching 🙂
Check.
You could always just post your opinions to the forum they belong in to begin with.
