Apart from signing onto teh Dave Baker show and thus improving my
rating I have taken the almost outrageous step of purchasing some
reading material - not one but 4 cheeky little chess books from a
quaint little bookstore run by a czech lady (probably a demon at
chess), so will be looking to finally getting into the 1400 club and
staying there.
Apart from the 'Winning' series which seems to be like gold dust in the
shops - any other recommendations - I know we have been down this
route before but this time its PERSONAL.

How can owning chess books be outrageous? I have almost 300 now.
And sign up anytime you feel.
"Gold Dust" huh? Guess what...all new chess books can run anywhere
from $12 to $30+....I know...but the Dover books are cheap if you can
deal with descriptive notation. 500 Master Games of Chess is
awesome and only around $12...and you can learn alot of cool attacks
that most people don't know anymore...other than that Lasker's
Manual of Chess....The Game of Chess by Tarrasch...these are all
good...dry...but cheap.
What books did you get?

You wil l probably think they are duffers ?? But In New Zealand most
shops dont have any so I thought I was lucky to find these. As I say
they are quite old (But Chess is quite an old game) so here goes :
The ideas behind Chess Openings - Reuben Fine - 1964
Winning with the Grunfeld - Adorjan and Dory - 1987
The Middle Game in Chess - Znosko - Borovsky - first published 1938
The NEw Chess Player - 1980
All for the grand price of $11 US (cheap - probably for a reason)
Will look out for your recommendations - I basically dont have a clue.
So from reading your posts Dave, you have played with some of teh
contemporary greats - what does that feel like? And what was your
best win ?
I own three of those...and the Fine book will help you alot...ook also
on Ebay..you can find some great steals on there.
I have played with alot of people over the years...even almost
grabbed a GM scalp a time or two...I have alot of killer wins..here is
one from the NY Open over another NM who I actually think had alot
to drink the night before
No annotations guys...sorry...just the game score up to the winning
move...I am still so busy on the book and a few other things.

harshly...but tactics will win every time!

stupid)
6.Qd1 Nc6
7.Be2 Nf6
8.0-0 Bg4
9.d3 e6
10.Be3 Bd6

Time to get rid of some of this crap around my king!!
18.Ne5! Bxe2
19.Rxe2 Bxe5

22.Rxc8 Rxc8
23.Rc2!!! Threatening Rxc8++ and Qxh5
....he played g6 and resigned on move 40
The pressure of tourney play is really alot different then what we have
here....and pyschology plays alot...just simple movements and a show
of indifference to a move the opponent feels is strong can break
someone down quick.
I have alot more...let me here some feedback on that one though.

The one beside d5 was just because that is really the best line and so
far nobody knew that...he did.
The one beside Nf1 is because it did alot of things...got him out of the
way of my pieces...and also protected my king from any back rank
checks that could have screwed up my combo.
