Why do bagels have a hole in the middle?

I’ve never understood this as it allows the contents to fall out, especially if it’s cottage cheese.

from a baker's point of view
bagel dough is dense and does not bake evenly
to achieve even baking across the whole the hole must be where the hole is

anyone who puts cottage cheese on a bagel is an unnameable scoundrel

What rookie wrote makes sense. Similarly, when heating or cooking stuff in the microwave, it's best to make a hole or a big dent in the middle so that it all gets heated evenly -- although of course that's not possible when microwaving water for tea.

After diver's post I wondered if cottage cheese in the UK/GB might be the same as cream cheese in the USA -- but after a quick web search it seems that it's a more sour version of cottage cheese than what we have over here.

And as for any kind of spread falling through the hole of a bagel, it's really just a matter of patience and painting around the circle with the tip of the knife or trowel or whatever.

On the subject of holes, halved cherry tomatoes provide a great anchor for circular sliced fried onions, stopping them from sliding out of a burger bun when you bite.

Big Docker Banjo with extra bacon

My first meal today was microwaved mac & cheese, with a can of tuna and some microwaved frozen green beans mixed in -- and some extra cheese added because I had over-seasoned the aforementioned.

Sounds good! I Iove pasta and veg for a late breakfast and tuna goes well with cheese. My favourite is a bowl of sauerkraut with boiled beetroot, sweet pepper & beans alongside my brie on toast.

A poor result. Ate the ones I’d burnt as hate food waste. To accompany my disappointment I feel horrible after all of that sugar & lard 🤢

It’s a quick recipe with SR flour, fat, currants & mixed spice. Think I prefer my pancakes with lemon though.
