I spotted a post on a yahoo story and read this --

I hate this private vs. public sector nonsense. Lets get it straight. Police forces-privatised yet subsidised by public cash. Trains privatised yet subsidised by public cash. Power companies privatised yet subsidised by public cash. Yes, the police forces are owned by private companies. Devonshire and Cornwall police for instance are owned by IBM, yet receive £256 million of public money every year. Check it out at Dun and Bradstreet or Company House or any business listing site.
Can anyone enlighten me as to it's veracity and what implications are there? and why the hell is it subsidised by public cash......... would this happen in America??
Originally posted by skipper2666It's not true, and it's already happening in the USA. You see, that's his mistake... it's not the Devon & Cornwall Police that's owned by IBM (what would a USA company do with a backwater English police force, anyway?) - it's the LAPD Devonshire Precinct.

Seems police can be "rented out" as private security officers, which seems a bit weird. When do they get the time?
And then there's this:
www.whatdotheyknow.com/.../ownership_of_police - United Kingdom
And again:

This one seems to indicate that the yahoo story was factually incorrect.
