I'm not sure about the derivation, but it's generally a good thing to have a bit of money, so I'm not surprised the word got adjectived. Yes, I just verbed 'adjective'.

...did you know the canadian slang term for their money is the "loonie"...i couldn't figure it out until i saw a picture of one of
the coins...it has a loon bird on it..hence, the "loonie" title...( gosh,
i wrote a serious and informative post...i guess i must have hit myself
on the head...i wonder how long it will last )

He didn't say "money" were slang for "money", but "money" were slang for what you call "ace" etc. in British English.

In that case no, I've never heard the word money being used for anything other than cash. [in the UK, that is]
