I nearly had heart faliure over you finding faith the other day, not funny, I'm too old for surprises like that.

Seriously, when I listened to the CDs you sent (admittedly 'Something for the Weekend' first, because it was a Wednesday--iTunes tells me I've listened to that Leonard Cohen song 56 times now), I thought to myself 'This Starrman fellow has some of the best taste in music around. Nicely done!' And now this. Talk about disillusionment with the hum ...[text shortened]... is Good and Righteous to burn a guitar in your yard for your apparent musical embarassments 😉.
No, what am I saying? Burn in the fires of my wrath, Doors haters!! I shall see ye expunged from this land!! Starting with any of you trying a mathematical proof of the quality of the Velvet Underground... that's right RC I've got my eye on you lad. 😉
It seems to me we're going to have to put it to the test.
Since this is a message board and message boards being message boards, I reckon we'll deal with the written side of Jimmy M's creativity? I'm sure we all agree.
I'm going to post 4 pieces of doors lyrics now. And I dare anyone here...no, I double dare anyone here to post ANYTHING by the Velvet Underground which is anywhere so remotely crap.
Lyrics 1.
I see your hair is burnin'.
Hills are filled with fire.
If they say I never loved you,
You know they are a liar.
Lyrics 2.
Let me sleep all night
In your soul kitchen,
Warm my mind
Near your gentle stove.
Turn me out and I'll wander, baby,
Stumblin' in the neon groves.
Lyrics 3.
The days are bright and filled with pain.
Enclose me in your gentle rain.
The time you ran was too insane.
We'll meet again.
We'll meet again.
Lyrics 4.
Dead president's corpse in the driver's car
The engine runs on glue and tar
Come on along, not goin' very far
To the East to meet the Czar
And while we're at it, does anyone dare suggest these lyrics are good (besides the metallica fans, we already know what level of text they like)?
Look, it was never about what he said, everyone will agree the man was a fool. I own Lords and Ladies and Small Creatures and I can tell you that JM was mostly way to drug crazed to even understand any of the poetry he wrote wither. It was however the tone of his voice, the way the lyrics tracked over the music and the showmanship that made him so good. It was the imagery, the emotion, not the use of english.
I like Lou Reed's lyrics, I just don't like VU much, a couple of tunes sure, but nowhere near the volume of work of the doors. And let's not forget that the bassist who wrote the riff for Walk on the Wild Side also wrote the appalling "Grandad" theme 😲
I'm not going to cling to this till the death, but I think it's a little unfair to label the doors in the same breath as metallica fans, I mean even if you don't like them, that's pretty harsh dude.

Got plenty of time for The Doors, except the abomination that is The Soft Parade. The VU are infinitely superior though - more talent in John Cale's little finger than any of the Doors band. Check the huge organ drone/vamp workouts (think he got that pinky stuck between the keys) with LaMonte Young's Theatre of Eternal Music or the three albums of lost tapes that came out on Table of Elements a couple of years back.
Gotta love Mo Tucker too!
