Is it possible for 'poor' people to become leaders? Can anyone think of any examples?

GWB is the most obvious example of a poor leader.

Wat Tyler, leader of the peasants' revolt.
Spartacus, leader of the slaves' rebellion.
Didn't do either of them any good, though.

A rich "poor" leader?

In a democracy there is no requirement that the leader be any good at anything. The only requirement is that they are popular.

Hitler was a poor excuse for a leader....does that count?

Luck and opportunity could make it possible.

Hitler was an extraordinarily smart and good leader (until he got whacked out on drugs). Just because we collectively disagree with what he did doesn't mean we should forget the fact that he lead the Nazi party through some amazing victories.

Simon Bolivar said
"He who works for liberty and glory should have another recompense than glory and liberty."

Traditionally, leaders have come from the rich elite class. The best leaders have been those who were born without liberty and had to create it somehow.

Not only was Lech Walesa poor, he had 9 of his own kids and 4 of his brother's (... yeah, go figure), and no one could understand what he meant when he said anything.

But if not him, who would The People have chosen to be President of Poland?

Sometimes a poor choice is better than a clever guy.

Ghandi was famously poor, though by choice - he gave up the money he had earned as a lawyer and took a vow of poverty.

Abe Lincoln was a poor farm boy. But I guess he was rich in family so I don't know.
