@shallow-blue saidIn some positions it's good to delay castling, keep your opponent guessing which way you're going to go.
Castle because you want to, or castle because you must, but never castle because you can.
@the-gravedigger saidAlso, the King must not be under attack, or pass through or land on a square under attack for the castling to be legal. However, this does not apply to the Rook; the Rook can even be under attack and still participate in a castling.
