Anyone suffering this?

I am beginning to. Why can't my friends / colleagues / wider circle of contacts seemingly do anything of merit without it needing to be for charity?

Why must some dress up their dream holidays as charity events? e.g. http://www.charitychallenge.com/index.html (first hit on google of "trekking for charity"😉

Why do some folks seek sponsorship for the most mundane of activities of which I can see they are far more capable of doing (or suffering?) more in the name of earning my admiration and potential sponsorship?

Why do supposed "good causes" need to continue to rattle collection tins under my nose or chug me for my bank details, while those in government continue to waste tax payers money on "bad causes" such as rescuing banks, fighting pointless wars, public sector redundancies replaced by consultants, and endless bureaucracy?

Why do I have the feeling that some charities don't want to fix the problem they're tackling? I mean it's not like if they did do that they'd be out of a job or anything.... would they?

Is this a taboo subject?

the main types of charities that annoy me are the ones that wait for you to stop for a red light and then come up to your window asking you to help "the children" - and you have no idea whether or not it's a legit operation but you feel like total scum if you say no to them.

This day and age, sorry to say, you really can't trust charities on face value. You have to do some research to find the legit ones to donate to.

It seems to me that no charity is ever happy with the donations they get. People can only give so much. I get sick of charity telemarketers ringing and asking for donations with a minimum contribution of $20. I'm happy to give a couple of bucks every now and then to charities that I know are reputable but those that set minimum contributions really p@ss me off.

A bloke came up to me and said he was collecting for the children of Rwanda and Zambia.

I said,"Oh yeah?? Name one of them!"

I don't think this stuff should be allowed at work unless your employer is the sponsor. Not everyone is in a position to give at all times. Work is for work, not charity parties, showers, birthdays, etc.

Otherwise, I give when I want, to what I want. I donate.

I gave up on charities a long time ago because;

1.
too many charities doing the same thing and competing with eachother ... VERY inefficient use of my money!

2.
charities doing the work of the government. Why do we need an NSPCC (UK) what the hell are Social services doing?

3.
Admin and management. Apparently the CEO of Oxfam gets in excess of £250,000 p.a.

4.
Years of giving money to Africa has solved nothing and merely perpetuated suffering and misery.

Cynical ... me?

If they kept it really low key and the public were expected to seek out the charities to give a contribution, I am sure that most of them would fold and more helpless people would die - the fact that many people simply dont care is why charitable organisations take thie stance, and many people pay them just as a way to get rid of the collector rather then out of a geniune feeling of altuism.
