Chess - a distraction?

Is Chess a distraction from important intellectual pursuits? For example, I should be writing scientific papers, preparing lectures, and writing grant applications. Instead, I play RedHot Pawn all day (well, not quite all day, but nearly).

Yes, it is.

Edit: As well as a distraction from things like sleeping, preparing food, cleaning, going for a walk, ...

Think what Bobby Fischer might have accomplished as a scientist, had he not fallen into the same trap you have! 😕

That is pure speculation. Chess was perhaps the only delay for his insanity.

Well, now you know lecturers do it as well. You'd better revise this weekend. Reward yourself. Promise yourself to study and revise for 2 hours, the reward being to vist RedHotPawn for 30 minutes, and no more. get yourself and ice-cream as well. Then revise again and reward yourself again. Good luck for Tuesday.

Pure speculation? About what? If I'd said that Fischer would have accomplished something as a scientist, THAT would be "pure speculation". But to wonder what might happen... No, that's not speculation at all.

Oh, naughty person. You would better start revising right now, as it'll be too late when you regret later on. Holiday coming soon anyway! Good luck for the exam and have good games afterwards.

I think chess is very addictive.
