I do not understand with the current discussions re: cheating how you can "legally" use a chess database. I thought that if you enter say a current game into the database its possible to look at what the next move was.
So IF I find a game played by say grandmasters that "happens" to match one of mine it could influence my next move?

I really don't see the point in anyone using engines, databases or any other way of cheating at all. What's the point? To win? Well, you might win, and even become the Grandmaster of RHP, but you will know in your own head that you did not have the skill to do it on your own. I'm pretty useless at chess, but I enjoy it, and I hope that by playing as often as I can that I will get better. And that's it. I'm really not fussed what my rating is, I just want to play as many different people as possible, and lose graciously if that's what I have to do...

total agree, so why are "they" allowed ?
Saying that though, I wish people would just play chess to play chess, not to try and get some sort of glory from people that you rarely, if ever, meet in person....
It's all a bit bizarre really.
i think you guys are all missing the point. sure, if you use a database, books or whatever just to win games you would not otherwise win, that is a bit empty. but if you do so with the aim of learning a new bit of theory so that next time you encounter a similar situation you will be well-armed to meet it, that's a different story.
