I was told that if you are in a hopeless position you should resign. Clearly there are players on this ite who do not do this. In one game my opponent asked me not to time him out whilst he was on holiday, yet I have a rook and bishop to nothing and his remaining pawns are about to be gobbled uo by my king and rook.

I accept it is within the rules of this site to keep going in say a 21/21 match even in a hopeless position and take 21 days between moves. However if it is the only game remaining in a round it stops the next round from starting.

In some circles, among GOOD players, it's considered bad manners to slavishly play on and extend a lost game.
To go on vacation in the situation you describe, I'd click on the skull the instant it popped up.

In the game you describe, where you are up alot of material and your opponent has no chance to win, you should just click the skull regardless of his vacation setting. It is of course, always up to the player to resign or play on, but here he should just have resigned or just accepted you would skull him. If he gets irate by pm, you can always put him on ignore list and consider him a winker(sounds like).
A tinker?

Even in hopeless cases I would play a game to the checkmate because maybe I can force a stalemate or my opponent might make a mistake.

However, if I went on holiday and found that all my games had timed me out, then I'd have to accept that loss as my fault. But I've just had a 3-week holiday and no one timed me out because I found an internet cafe on the beach in Bermuda and a week later in Martinique.

And Sashimixir just spent about 6 years in an Indian jail and he didn't get timed out either, did he? Or did I misunderstand something there....
