I'm a lot better at haiku than I am at chess... note the at least semi-traditional format including (a) nature metaphors and (b) an appropriate level of oblique references 🙂

Crown of thorns awakes
winter's night chills polished bone
queen's gambit declined

In the afternoon
Men play chess with battered boards
And heavy accents

I gave him my queen
He gave me a sound thrashing
The art of exchange

Rank and file hide mind
harvest time brings rich rewards
pin in haystack found

As the storm subsides
Defying the winter's wrath
The King stands alone
