According to 'The Complete Chess Adict' by Fox & James the Cosmonaut Vitaly Sevastianov became head of the Soviet Chess federation. He also played the first game between Space and Earth while in Soyuz 9 in 1970 (it was a draw).
I heard somewhere that the Soviets later banned cosmonauts on long trips from playing chess between themselves because of the potential for causing ill will!
