i'm assuming that astro/cosmonauts stuck in orbit have played the occasional game of chess, and that they use a magnetic set. does anybody know who is the most accomplished player of space chess?

According to 'The Complete Chess Adict' by Fox & James the Cosmonaut Vitaly Sevastianov became head of the Soviet Chess federation. He also played the first game between Space and Earth while in Soyuz 9 in 1970 (it was a draw).
I heard somewhere that the Soviets later banned cosmonauts on long trips from playing chess between themselves because of the potential for causing ill will!

the version i heard has it that it was not so much the chess that caused the ill-will, but the accompanying forum debates😉

What about the people from the Dune books, the slavemaster Feyd-Rautha has killed? NOt on purpose, but it was over a game of 3-D chess.

Perhaps Admiral James T. Kirk is. I think Lieutenant Commander Data would beat both Mr. Spock and Admiral Kirk. What rank did Mr. Spock have?

I reckon HAL would beat Data. If Data got the upper hand, then HAL would just jettison him into space, and wait for the timeout.

I do not know about HAL, but Data has the ability of a computer and the ability of a man to reason. Perhaps Data vs. HAL would be a even match?

Ender Wiggin would dominate this competition. He's a military genius who works through wargames and thinks outside the box.

Orson Scott Card is an excellent writer. I suggest you read the book and read the rest of the series.
