Why do some players insist on continuing to play on when 3 or 4
pieces down or a queen down?. I am not referring to any of my
opponents but i am an avid game watcher. I am very surprised how
some people will drag a game on, especially as some players are
limited to the number of games they can play. Playing on for weeks in
a completely lost position is i think not only insulting to your opponent
but also bad for the site.

Being a relative newcomer to chess (playing about four months) there
are times when I know that I have been beaten, but continue to play.
There are many reasons for this - one is that sometimes you don't
realise you are totally beaten until you have made a few moves.
Secondly, if you are up against someone good, it is interesting to
watch how they go around beating you, so that next time you play
them you have a better understanding of how games develop.
Understandably for top players this may be annoying, but in the lower
reaches of the ratings even when you know you can't win, continuing to
play can help you understand not only when you went wrong, but WHY
that wrong move is so wrong!

This of course is absolutely true and just about the best way to go
about it. But in Tony's defense it would be nice to let your opponent
know that you know the game is lost but want to see how they handle
the rest and ask them questions about what you could have done
better.
I have played lots of games where they were totally gone for my
opponent and he took them out to mate just to see how I set up a
mating net against a certain type of pawn structure or mating with a
rook, knight, and bischop etc...
Still like I said...it is very cordial to convey what you are doing to the
other party so there will be no ill feelings about it.

Absolutely...you will find only a handfull of people that will still be mad
if you handle it that way.
And I hear that you want to improve...sorry to say that untill the
tourney is over with I can't take on anymore pupils...but if you want to
hop into the Chess Theory Forum I can answer pretty much any
question you have and also point you in the right direction..books and
all.

I posted a post (probably not the correct phrasology) a couple of days
ago asking people to recommend some good websites to look at. I
got a good response - the most useful being www.letsplaychess.com
who have a useful section titled 'play better'. I would also be
interested in becoming a pupil, and really don't mind waiting. I'm not
intending on going anywhere in the future
Cheers, Mark
If like to play me and if I would happen to get a "large" lead, I do not
mind if you continue all the way to the end. I have a player who I
have played over 20 times because he wants to practice his "end"
game. The games have been very entertaining!
Sincerely,
Harri / (with) Luck 🙂
