I've never been able to connect to it in the 4 months I've had ChessBase 8 - what's the trick?

Don't know about connecting via the software.I was talking about the site.
www.chessbase.com has an online database,but it seems to be down:'(

I've tried to enter the site when you initiated this thread, but don't report the result... 😳 Sorry.
No problems to connect. Chessbase is there, as ever, and loads very quickly indeed (no broad band connection here... I have a humble 56K modem :'( )
