Chessmaster's engine is The King. As with Fritz, the interface and engine come together. The Fritz GUI, however, supports several other engines (more than one are usually part of the package when you buy it), including UCI engines (of which there are more than 100). The newest version of CM allegedly supports UCI engines, but I haven't seen any reports of testing this feature. Based on other experiences and reports concerning CM X, I would expect their UCI support to be a bit buggy. AFAIK, CM 9000 does not support UCI.
