Dear Redhotpawn colleagues,
This is probably not a kosher posting, and future postings of this sort may be outlawed. But let me be brash, bold, and brazen (though not necessarily in that order), and post it anyhow, on the grounds that not every post here is (a) chess-related or (b) sensible.
Perhaps you have stopped by to read my RHP profile. Despite its largely generally surreal content, reflective of my weird sense of humour, at least one fact listed is true, namely, that I’m a social psychologist, and one who conducts empirical research. And I am currently conducting a project for which I require, fairly desperately, CHRISTIAN participants. So, if you are both a RHP subscriber and a Christian, and are interested in taking part, please email me at:
aiden_gregg@hotmail.com
Alternatively, if you feel impatient, you can also go directly to the study website. The URL is:
http://www.soton.ac.uk/~crsi/true_false.html
That’s an underscore “_” between “true” and “false”.
The “Christian” study is number 2 of 3 studies listed.
What you do is (a) download a program; (b) run it on your PC; (c) do the study it runs; (d) let the program save a datafile on your C:/ drive; (e) attach that datafile back to me at:
crsi@soton.ac.uk
Oddly enough, my goal is not to discover or infer something about Christians per se, still less about individual research participants, but to test a more general hypothesis. However, I can only reveal it to you once you have taken part, as telling you in advance might bias your results. I will fully debrief you by email once you have sent me the data.
What does the study involve? You will classify multiple statements as either true or false by pressing either one key or another on your keyboard. Some of these statements will concern the world at large
(Grass is green/Grass is blue) and some will concern your beliefs as a Christian (God exists/There is no supreme being). Sometimes your task will be to tell the truth, other times, not to. Full instructions are included. The study takes 10-15 minutes to do.
If you are not a Christian, you can still take part in some related studies. The website lists two other studies you can do if you are not a Christian. The procedure for participating is the same.
I would be happy to chat about the results of these studies here, or to you individually. I hope to present data from them at Harvard University next month.
Thanks a lot,
Aiden (Pawnokeyhole)
Why does this require a program to be installed on the participant's hard-drive? Why can it not be run directly from a website if all it requires was a true/false response to a number of questions?
If this were anywhere but here I would be highly suspiciously. As it is I'm only moderately suspicious, but must admit also quite curious.
However, I'm not a Christian anyway.

Do you define Christian by birth or by belief? There are many people (like myself) who were baptized some form of Christianity but question or reject many of the basic tenets of that form of religion.

Babies are born into families who believe.
So I dismiss that as true belief.
Seek and you will find.
Be born again.

I did not want to leave a lady after "mating" her, so I tried with another "quicky", but your setting is blocking me from sending you a game!

I'm an RHP subscriber, but my name is Mark unfortunately. One of my friends is called Christian though if that helps?
Seriously though, good luck with your research 🙂

If I ever do a study on the psychology of humor, you'll be the first one I'll call 🙂

Fair question. The answer is: I don't know how to do it on the web! So far I can only write stand-alone programs using a master package called Authorware. However, we have a programmer developing a web-based platform at the moment.
I can't quite defuse your suspicions entirely, but here's a link to me at my university. Note the program website has a very similar address.

My study requires currently believing Christians who believe the conventional core doctrines.
