The Wise Men knew there was to be a king born for they had studied Isaiah 9.
They knew the time was right for they had studied Daniel 9

The Wise Men saw his star in the east. They understood the signs of Jesus’s coming. They had read Numbers 24 and knew to expect a star.

But they must not have had the writings of the prophet Micah. Micah 9 foretold the king was to be born in Bethlehem. That is why they needed to ask where the king was to be born.

If they had been following the star, it would have led the directly to Bethlehem. They didn’t start following the star until after they left Herod, and then they rejoiced with exceeding great joy to see the star. (Matt 2)

The wise Men followed the star from Jerusalem to Bethlehem, about five miles.

The Wise men found Jesus in a house, not in a manger. (Matt 2)

We are not told how many Wise Men followed the star. Three is the number of gifts given to Jesus so the Christmas story is told with three Wise Men. All we really told is that there were more than one. (Matt 2)

The Wise Men were wise because they studied the scriptures and they listened to God and disobeyed King Herod. (Matt 2)

The Wise Men were wise because they actually stopped and asked for directions.

Do people actually take this story literally as historical fact?

I always thought of it more as a fable...
