In no way was my question intended to indicate that I was in favor of
drug abuse, or that I myself am currently engaging in such...
pursuits. I have sensed a very anti-drug sentiment in the replies, and
I applaud this, as we have some younger folks among us that need
the older ones to be positive role models. Now, about those of you
who admit to playing while drinking....

I have been reading the post on this sensitive issue. I've kept quiet.
I'm not in the drug rehab business. I spent seven years as a
Paramedic. While on duty as such, I encountered too many incidence
of overdoses causing useless loss of lives. I've responded to too
many auto accidents caused by drunked drivers. The driver normally
survives. Need I say more.
John
I have worked in alcoholism rehabilitation facilities, and I have also
done volunteer work with substance abusers in a maximum security
state penitentiary. My brother is a firefighter and paramedic who has
seen the same as you, John. This is precisely why I posted a
clarification-- because I did not want to seem as if I were pro-drug or -
alcohol.
NOW-- how many of us are killing ourselves with cigarettes? I know
the stereotype of the "Chess Player" generally has him being a chain-
smoker (i.e. The Luzhin Defense)-- how many people here live up to
that stereotype, I wonder.

Tim...as my best bud on here I am wondering where you are going
with all of this?
People's private lives and what they do in their home is up to them.
I don't smoke...but got addicted to Kodiak (that is dip/snuff for
anyone who does not know) when I was playing ball.
I guess it is just as tough to quit as smoking...hopefully soon I will
realize I don't need to do it anymore.
Chess Players as a general...and trust me I am one who can talk
about it...all have their vices...but the fact of the matter is...if there
really is a higher power...he will do the judging...not us.
I could care less about anyone I play here when it comes to their
personal preferences...if they want to share it with me then great...if
not...their choice. But any who wants to know about me...Hell...the
truth is easy for me to tell. I mean I ashamed more of being out of
work for 6 months than drinking a beer or having a dip. Ok...enough
of my rant...one quote for all though from Emmanuel Lasker.
"Lies and Hypocrisy do not last long on the chess board"
Basically stating...if you are full of crap...your game will show it.
Thanks Tim for starting this though...new insights into the minds of
who we all are.
Dave
Dave--
I wasn't really going anywhere in particular with that whole line of
questions. You put it best in your last line, I guess-- "new insights
into the minds of who we all are." I guess, being someone who does
99.9 percent of his chess-playing on the Internet, I just wanted to see
if there was any sort of "profile," for lack of a better word, of
the "average" chess player. But, as I probably should have expected
in a community this large, there is far too much diversity to draw any
sweeping conclusions-- which I suspect is true of the chess-playing
world at large, not just our little red-hot corner of it.
Thanks to all who responded.
