I don't agree with that - I think people convince themselves that their age sets them back - it's all in the mind.
still, I don't regret the years I did art, in fact, I would encourage to take a break. even a longer break. nobody knows anything about themselves at 18-20 old, and most of the 'long term' -plans decided on then will prove to be mistakes. it seems the things start to clarify when you get closer to 30, or even at 50+, or possibly never.
but there's also the danger of getting passive with breaks. you might never get around to continue studying.
