Ah, no it doesn't.

One is a firewall, the other anti-virus. Keep them both as they do seperate jobs.

My computer seems to be running better now i have disconnected Zone Alarm.I have not totally removed from computer ,but just turned it off.
Why would running both at the same time be affecting my computer(it switches off from windows explorer,my emails play up ,my pop server fails )

If you are talking about AVG Free, it does not come with a firewall [as stated by Ragnorak already]. ZA do a firewall AND an Anti-Virus program combined [as well as a separate firewall program] so maybe that is what you had installed. Either way, if it causes some kind of conflict [which also happened to me] you have the option to try a different firewall [free ones available - eg Agnitum Outpost]
By the way AVG updates automatically daily.

Turn off Windows firewall if you get another one.

No they don't. They just aren't configured correctly.

AVG doesn't have its own firewall. AVG + Firewall Edition does. But that's not free.

will the windows firewall work the same as the zone alarm?
Do you run AVG free with Agnitum Outpost.
What does the firewalls actually do,im still learning about this computer stuff?

I do use AVG FREE + Outpost on this computer. Windows firewall is not as good as proper firewalls insofar as it blocks unwanted incoming traffic but not outgoing. [unless that has been changed in their new OS-Vista] Of course, it would be better than nothing at all.

Here's a small article on WF.

a firewall stops unwanted programs and users from accessing your computer. it's basically a wall between your computer and the internet, which only lets certain packets* enter (and, indeed, leave). think of it as your own, personal berlin wall. 🙂 you also get hardware firewalls that sit between your computer and the internet.

an anti-virus program searches for viruses and other malicious programs on your computer. it's also useful to get spybot as this searches for spyware which slows down your computer (i believe many anti-viral software don't pick these up, but am unsure 😛)

*for instance, your internet browser would have to go through your firewall, or anythig you download. your e-mails. the music store on i-Tunes. everything that accesses the internet must go through the firewall.
