OK, I've got a brand new Dell computer at work. Don't know the specs but my company doesn't skimp. Installed Fritz on it to do some chess when my boss isn't looking. Calculates 3000 killa something ply per second. My home computer is almost eight years old. It's a Dell also, mid-range when I bought it. It calculates about 1000 killa ply per second with similar Fritz software (not identical, whatever the difference is between Chessbase 2007 Light and 2009 Light, figure it doesn't matter too much as far as processing speed). Anyway, how is it that pc's have only trippled in speed after eight years? Seems to violate Joe Bob's Theorem that computers double in speed every 18 months.

The DDR SDRAM (double data rate synchronous DRAM) is about twice as fast at the old SDR SDRAM.

That's all I know of it but I'm sure there is more to the story.

I think you're talking about Moore's Law?

Here's the story:

My computer has certainly not doubled its speed the last 18 months. 🙁

See, what actually has happened is you have lost half your speed in the last 18 months and it only APPEARS as if your computer has doubled in speed🙂

my first guess is you slipped an extra zero on the '3000' figure.

oh wait, I mixed them up, that was the NEW machine...

well, anyway, somethings very wrong there, the numbers don't add up.
