One of the people i'm currently playing(I won't mention any names) are doing a bit of a strange thing. I'm playing 2 games with them, 1 as black, the other as white. In one game after the opening moves they started off with a slight advantage over me and since then have been making regular moves in the game to a point where they've now more or less beaten me. Fair enough. What is puzzling me is that in the other game, reckon I have a very slightly better position, they are taking forever and a day to make their next moves. I appologise if i'm reading too much into this, but it's almost as though they've got a computer running away working out the best moves to make, hence why it's taking them longer to move in this other game with me. This person has been making regular moves in most of their other games in between making 1 move in this one game with me. I understand if this game needs more thinking about but if that is the case how come they are still able to make plenty of moves during all their other games. They can't be spending that much time thinking about this one we're playing. Do you see what I mean or am I just making more of this than I should be??

Some playesr slow down when losing purely 'cos it's not so much fun analysing the losing position as it is to play on in the winning position. I know I'm guilty of this at times, though I try not to do it.

So long as they are playing within their time controls then there is nothing you can do m'fraid - choose shorter time controls in future?

It is unlikely to be anything more sinister.

While I'm not in your league at this gam I would guess your opponent is just spending more time on your dubious game. Maybe he needs to concentrate more on this game and therefore does move at work but waits till he can analyse the board properly at home!

i see what your saying. but how on earth could we prove or disprove it. maybe he is taking longer in this game cos he is on the losing side of the game? You could fask the developers for their opinion in the appropriot forum.

i had a similar freak once.. i know that the "Skip" option is great but it encourages players to ignore not-doin-great games..

ask them.. see if they go all red and make lots of mistakes.. the worst reponse you'll get is a move played in the game..

it's a tournament so i can't choose different time controls.

Anyhow, like I said, it's probably just me reading more into it than I should be.

If they are losing in this game then they are probably not using an engine. They are probably mulling over every possibilty to drag themselves out of the mire. A much more plausible explanation don't you think? 🙂

I will always put more effort into a game im loosing. I've also found that when someone gains an advantage against me, if a week passes between a crutial move, they often slacken up (assuming they've already won) which makes drawing easier. Just don't drop your guard, make sure you're playing the best move you can and don't fall into the trap of moving quickly in the hope they'll speed up (if their green dot is lit while your thinking, for example ).
