A nostalgic look at things you used to be able to buy, that seem to have disappeared.....
Does anyone remember aniseed balls, the ones that actually had an little black seed in the centre of them that stuck in your teeth.
We used to get them given for good work at primary school. No wonder all my teeth are falling out (modesty!)
I used to like individually wrapped "Maryland Toffe" and Highland Toffee as well. The real Highland Toffee, not the slighty hardened fudge that they sell now...
Wham bars! Death by sugar they were. Never has there been a more enamel destroying sweet. Ahh, those were the days.
Also miss penny sweets, they're just not as popular as they used to be. Especially liked fizzy cola bottles and shrimps.
Special mention to flying saucers to, you can still get them in Woolworths, but they sure as hell ain't as good as they used to be. Kids these days just can't take 'sour' like we could. Sherbert hasn't got any kick any more 🙁
The list is bloody endless.
We moved to Holland in 1982 (you could call me a political refugee of sorts, I guess) and Holland back then had pure chocolate and milk chocolate. They had two flavours of crisps too (that's chips for our american friends): ready salted and paprika.
Things have become better through the nineties and now I live in Utrecht (central city in Holland) and you can get most things. They even have an "English" shop.
But still not everything...
Here's some of the things I've had to do without for years (although I did live in England a couple of times for a bit), but can get now:
- Curly Wurlys
- Cadbury's fruit and nut
- Salt and vinegar crisps
- Prawn cocktail crisps
- Irn Bru
- Crunchy
Here's some of the things I'd murder a child for:
- FISH AND CHIPS (the real stuff...)
- Peppermint poppets
- Proper steak and kidney pie
- fruit flavoured polo (mints)
- mint flavoured chewits
God I'm drooling. Where's my wine?

I mean, what's a wham bar that doesn't near break your teath then pull out all your fillings? OK, so they're both pink, but thats about all they have in common.

Other oldies of note: spangles, texan bars, red devils, sprinters, space dust and many many more....
