How bout this one: you know you can go, say, 320 miles on a tank
of gas. Yet when you see the gas gauge at the halfway point it is
inevitably at around 200 miles, so if you don't think about it, you
might base your driving times and whether or not you have enough
gas to get to where you are going based on an invalid assumption.
I have never seen a gas gauge that was accurate. So it says 204 miles
or something and its exactly halfway. You get this warm and fuzzy
feeling you have enough gas and boom, one hundred miles later
you are almost on E. What gives here? Every car I have owned or
rented does that little trick. Co-incidence? I wonder....

You just don't have the guts to go under the E. Keep driving... you'll make it.

My gauge is so messed. It doesn't ever touch F, and I've had the needle halfway through the E and still kept going. So I hit the halfway point at about... 4/5

It normally isn't a big deal if your gas tank is 0.9 full or 0.85 full. However that may be a big deal at the bottom end of the tank. By having the lower half of the gauge cover less fuel it gives more distinction.
