Stingrays don't turn on anyone or anything. They don't actively use their sting, it's just that they have one and if you get in the way of it it hurts and is occasionally fatal.

It would seem this is a freak accident. I read an interview with him once in which he said there was an internet sweepsrake somewhere that was taking bets on how Steve Irwin would die. I bet nobody had it as a stingray.
