Curiosity Question (2013)

RHP Forum... Total Threads... Cumulative Total (February 1, 2013)

1] General Forum = 37,303 /37,303

2] Only Chess = 16,225 / 53,528

3] Debates = 12,881 / 66,409

4] Spirituality = 7,927 / 74,336

5] Help = 7,238 / 81,574

6] Clans = 5,548 / 87,122

7] Site Ideas = 4,625 / 91,714

8] Posers and Puzzles = 3278 / 95,025

9] Sports = 3,212 / 98,237

10] Culture = 1,598 / 99,835

11] Science = 1,359 / 101,194

12] Announcements = 338 / 101,532

13] Developers = 315 / 101,847

14] Clubs = 168 / 103,015

Forum Thread Average = 7,358 (103,015 /14)

Observations:

a) The Top Five (5) Forums Account for 79.2% of Total Threads (81,574 / 103,015)

b) The Spirituality Forum Accounts for 7.7% of Total Threads (7,927 / 103,015).

c) The Science Forum Accounts for 1.3% of Total Threads (1,359 / 103,015)

One Question: Given the Point/Counterpoint Relationship Between Spirituality and Science in Contemporary Conversation,
why would the RHP Spirituality Forum Account for 5.83 Times More Threads than the Science Forum? (7,927 / 1,359)

Perhaps it's because there are less people in the science forum who insist on retaining incoherent beliefs / belief systems.

"b) The Spirituality Forum Accounts for .077% of Total Threads (7,927 / 103,015). "

7,927 / 103,015 = .077, not .077%.

.077 is 7.7%.

I didn't check your other math.

In answer to your question, people who post to Science don't generally use it to debate conflicts between faith and reason or between this faith and that faith. [Edit: people like RJ drop into Science once in a while but don't get very far.]

Also, since Galileo, disputes within the realm of science are settled by an agreed method which lets the chips fall where they may. Disputes in the realm of religion don't have such a method. [Edit: Your question belongs in Science {as psychology, sociology, or history of science and religion) unless the only answer you will accept is a Spiritual one like 'Because God wants it that way.']

Possibly because in the science forum we don't need to reprove evolution every 5 minutes.

The fact that more people like yelling the same arguments at each other over and over again
when arguing about religion doesn't indicate much other than the number of irrational people
involved in the arguments.

Also while this may be a good site for having knock down arguments about religion there are
far better places to go for good discussions of/news of science.

Given your recent thoughtful threads in the Spirituality forum, this stark kneejerk assessment seems rather... um, disappointing.

I would say that the reality is that Science is rather cut and dried, whereas Spirituality leaves room for differences of opinion, differences of belief and differences of tolerance, leading to a much more lively discussion. I'm in a slightly different place than most posters here, for while I have a strong religious outlook, I also understand and accept Science as fact. I just don't see much point in expressing an opinion in the Science forum. Science is not about opinion chasing, and so does not lend itself to much forum argument/discussion. that's all.

There are plenty of difference of opinion in science, it is anything but cut and dried. There are people in science who have a lifetime invested in pursuing their particular field and if someone new comes along with different results, fireworks usually ensues. I have been in the middle of several of those discussions, I saw it first hand.

Well, true enough. Just look at the differences between Leonard Susskind and Stephen Hawking as outlined in Susskind's book The Black Hole War: My Battle with Stephen Hawking to Make the World Safe for Quantum Mechanics. I have that book and had no trouble keeping up with the science. I recommend it to anyone.

It's just that fact-gathering is a little more problematic in Spirituality than in Science, as a general rule.

Yaayyy. There are more nutters in spirituality than in science.

The math proves it.

One small comment about the original data. Both forums were originally split off from the main forum thread, currently named the General Forum, created in 2001 (almost 12 years old). For several years the Spirituality and Science was contained in the GF.
Spirituality was created in February 2005 and thus has operated for 8 years.
Science was created in February 2008 and has operated for 5 years.
So the percentages given are completely erroneous, and even the raw numbers are inaccurate.

If you look back through the Spirituality Forum, you will find the same topics being rehashed over and over, some for dozens of repetitions. Very few of those rehashes appear in Science.
