With all the religion talk going on over at the Passion of Christ thread (though I'm not sure how much of it is about the actual movie - hey I love you guys!) - I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts, concerns, ideas about the concepts and theories proposed and argued in the novel The Da Vinci Code.
Warning to those who have not read the book - This thread is liable to contain story spoilers.
Originally posted by turtlexSeeing as how it was centuries after the fact from the death of Christ to the founding of "the church", it seems strange that there would be nothing written by women that could be included. At least at first glance. Then you look more deeply and realize that "not many" if any women were given the chance to learn to read or write in that time. Indeed, not many people AT ALL could do it. So it is open to debate and speculation, i suppose.

But your post reminded me of the other great Cryptogram controversy, ie, Ignatius Donnely's thirty year quest to prove that Bacon and several others were "Shakespeare". see "The Great Cryptogram: Francis Bacon's Cipher in the So-Called Shakespeare Plays". 1888
The two books, [sic Da Vinci Code et al] read almost identically. I hadn't read Donnely's since the early sixties, but in my memory, the two were about the same in tone and texture.

Mike - hey, I had never heard of that other book and I'll check it out.
I will say, that the one thing the "Da Vinci Code" has done is given me a long list of other books to look into. Not limited to a book about "PHI" (pronounced fee) which has just arrived.

But could you explain to me exactly why your biblical scholars mixed units in their calculations? First off, meters, feet and miles were not defined at the writing of the passage your dealing with, so why would your scholars choose (km/sec) and miles to come up with their ratio? Even if we are dealing with a ratio...it could be a ratio of anything to anything...I think there must be a better example for 666...anybody have one?
