It meant the "pain" (I think) that comes from realizing the difference between reality and what "could be" (or somethin ...[text shortened]... , but I've forgotten it, and Google Language Translator hasn't been any help to me yet.
It doesn't start with "VE", but I guess you are probably thinking of "Weltschmerz": http://german.about.com/od/vocabulary/a/spellbeeger.htm

You should have done what I did - search for something like "US National Spelling Bee German". 🙂
