Hello to all, I have been given a Dell Laptop Inspiron 1200 ...when I go to start it the screen stays blank but the green lights are on so there's power there ,but , it's like the contrast has been turned right down (it's not) as i can just make out the logos as it starts up, then nothing ...is it worth me getting some help from an engineer or not

Cheers for any help you can give,

Diane

There should be a video connector on the back of the thing. If you connect it to an external monitor, this might tell you if the thing is working but the screen is bad....I'm not sure where you'd go from there though.

If you do this and you have good video with the external monitor, it very well could be a burnt out back light in the laptop screen, since you said that you can barely see logos when it comes on. It's similar to a short and thin fluorescent bulb.

I managed to replace one once and it required soldering, but if you know anyone who plays around with computers and electronics they may be able to help you with it. Of course they will need to find a replacement bulb for it as well.

If you live somewhere that has local computer repair shops it wouldn't hurt to ask someone for an estimate to fix the video.
