So, which one would you pick? Later in life though submerged in
terrifyingly slow agony, or sooner but instantaneously, let's say
while you sleep?

think it probably depends on the gap between the 2 events, age wise!

If it was a day (or a month), I'd go the latter

Slow and agonizing is the way to go. I imagine the intensity of feelings would be greater than anything else one could experience.
