I need to buy a digital camera for uni. It must have a user definable white balance feature and be quite a good camera, but not overly expensive. What sort of price should I be looking at and can you recommend any particular make/model that is worth the money. I don't want to be ripped off, and I don't want loads of features I'm not going to need. I just want to be able to take good quality pictures, but it must have user definable white balance.
Thanks.

If white balance is that important to you get one that shoots raw so you don't have to give a damn about white balance. You can set it after the shot.

Or you can try Kodak. Mine has a white balance you can manually alter, although it's just a few preset alterations. No fine tuning. You can take the raw data as suggested above in a post but its cumbersome and you need to know what you're doing.

WHen you say about user definable white balance, do you mean changing the setting between settings like fluorescent/flash/tungsten/cloudy/sunny etc, or do you mean setting the white balance by taking a picture of some white card?
Is size important to you?
Buying a mag like "Which Digital Camera" or something like that, is a good first step. They normally have short reviews of all the cameras, so you can get an idea what's good at your price range.

My advice for buying a camera - go to www.cameras.co.uk. Then google the cameras you like the look of and look at other reviews. The site also shows the cheapest place to buy the camera online, but don't forget to factor whether or not the camera needs a lens adaptor. I wouldn't reccomend going to shops simply because I can't throw salesmen very far, thus they can't be trusted 😉

The UDWB is basically becuase I will be using it mostly in theatres it needs to be able to cope with tungsten lighting on stage. I'd like this to be as easy as possible to do.
I'd prefer a nice small camera, not a big heavy chunky one.
I'll definatly have a look at that magazine.
What would be your opinion on a camera like the Panasonic Lumix DMC LS2? http://imgs.idnes.cz/digitv/A060116_VSE_PANASONIC_LZ2_V.JPG
edit: It's £87.95 from Jessops.

What was your reason for this post?
What was your reason for starting the intensely negative, inciteful thread: "Welcome to RHP"? A new user comes along, and sees a thread welcome to RHP, and thinks wonderful, lets see what this site is about, and they get to see pages of you stirring crap and negativity about RHP and its community.
If you were going to write a thread targetting newcomers, why didn't you focus on the positive aspects of RHP; the brilliant interface, the myriad of tournaments, Clans and Clan Leagues, sieges, continuous improvements by both site admin and site users, spirited community, great chess forum, etc, etc.
No, you'd prefer to be negative and to start another thread designed to incite people into more arguments. Grow up a little.

2 things wrong with that camera. 1: ISO only goes up to 400. WHich means it won't work very well internally without a flash which means that you'll have to be close to the subject and 2: The auto white balance settings are • Auto • Daylight • Cloudy • Halogen • White Set, which doesn't seem to include tungsten (are Halogen and tungsten the same? ).
Otherwise it looks good for the price with the Image Stabilisation a big plus.
