I'm an English man who recently married an American. She has been with me to a series of anti-war demonstrations in the UK over the last month. She remains in regular contact with many family and friends in the US, the overwhelming majority of whom, regardless of previous political affiliations, do not want to see a war.

My wife believes that the quality of the information given to American people on the main network news programmes is very poor and biased compared with news services in the UK and elsewhere, which may be partly why a section of the American people aren't very well informed about what's going on internationally, and are feeling scared and embattled right now.

You do not want to get English and British mixed up in the same sentance, that can lead to all sorts of problems!!! Britain is England, Wales and Scotland (i.e. the whole island). Many people on this site may be proud to be British but offended to be called English.

well yeah i know that, i am english an i aint no southern, heck dont get me started on southerners! it was jus a typo, pity americans dont know the difference, at my uni the americans are always calling us british, at work one even said she loved the british accent, what does a british accent sound like? also, every american i've talked to at uni seems pro war so it is refreshing to hear an anti war stance from some, although i am pro war myself

And Northern Ireland.
Britain is a political entity (including NI) and a geographical island (England Scotland and Wales). "The British Isles" includes the Republic of Ireland too. I think it was the Greeks who named them the British Isles so nothing to do with recent politics! πŸ™‚
PS. I think the Greeks called them the Brittanic Isles, from Pre-tannic meaning before something or other...need to check up on that!

Well my bolshevik friend, I am an American and the majority of Americans, although we are not warmongers, do not want to wait around for the next round of terrorism on our land. If you are for or against conflict it has never ceased to amaze me how the left always is willing to run to the streets with picket signs and make a lot of noise, while the conservative majority does not. I suspect however its because the majority of us have jobs. As far as how Americans feel about the Brits, we feel just fine about them. And speaking from the point of view of a man who is half French and half English, you dont have to ask whos getting dinner invites from here on out. Of course "western society" is always corrupt in the eyes of some, perhaps all societies should use dear old Uncle Joes tactics of compassion and understanding with dealing conflict. And before the rebuttals begin about this is all about oil, I would like to say that western countries have pumped enough capital into the middle east to raise everyones standard of living if the goverments in power used the money for the betterment of all. There are arab nations that enjoy a higher standard of living than western nations, of course theyn are not the ones sporting 20 palaces and complaining that the "great satan" is the root of all their problems. I have seen biased media stir the pot for months, and multimillionare liberals are not going to change the inevitable outcome of what is going to happen here. Hear these words my friend, no matter what you hear in the media, I GUARANTEE you that the silent majority in the United States is not going to tolerate any more crap like 9-11.Its time for stone age thinking to join the 21st century. This aint no time to be singing Puff the Magic Dragon.I guarantee you any more terrorism over here is going to be met with responses that they will be talking about 100 years from now. So go down the street to your cafe, sing your little songs about power to the people, yada yada yada. I got a kid brother in a tank in Kuwait right now laying his life on the line so you can have the freedom to complain about how evil the west is, instead of having to sit on a sand dune and eats dates and swat flies.
Have a nice day, Bob

well said, i would be in a similar position as your brother if i hadnt have managed to get into uni, fortunately (or unfortunately) i did but my best friend didnt so he's going out their as part of the naval task force alongside the royal marines, and as for my mate sandie, he's already been out there for two 3 month stints as an engineer for the RAF. i wish i was taking a more active role, i guess i'm too patriotic,as my great grandfather and uncles did in WW1, my grandad did in WW2, and my dad did in the falklands and gulf war 1, but im not, so i wish those that are, well.

British & English, I got no beef with. I wish GB didn't support the war. Is it not ironic that here in the US we pride ourselves on our democracy, and yet at the UN we threaten other countries to get the vote the way we want it. Close to half the people in the US do not want war, and yet the mass majority of our representatives beat the war drums. Democracy my ass! 😠

It will be found that Iraq has terrorist ties to Al Queda. And by the way, just what is your attraction to dictatorships?
