basment! Why would a house broken dog start peeing on the basement floor? He is 5 yo and was house trained till this week. I moved his tie out to the other side of the house last week and he was fine. Now when I tie him out he stares at the house. I don't watch him to see if he eventually goes, but I should think being out for an hour or so he would go. Also pooped on the basement floor two times this week. What could be the problem? I am going to start with retraining with a crate, but I don't really like that method. He is a really great dog other than doing this. I don't understand the staring at the house bit when hes outside.

Edit - This is more common than you might think.

Can you move your dog back to the original side of the house to see if that caused the problem? My cat will only pee in the back yard, he won't do it at the front of the house.

Originally posted by cheshirecatstevensYour dog may be stressed out. Take him to the gym once a while and to the chess club occasionally. After benching, a run on the treadmill and a few blitz games he should be fine.

Do you feed him on a regular schedule? I think going back to crate training (especially at night) is a good idea. I would also try to use positive reinforcement. Watch for when he pees & poops outside. Immediately praise & treat after the deed.
You might try limiting the water you give the dog too (at feeding times).

Originally posted by Pawn QweenYou confine the dog to a crate that is just big enough for him to lay down in. The idea is you want the space to be so small that he can not pee or poop in one corner and then lay in another. Similarly, you can use empty boxes to block off a larger crate so you don't have to buy a separate one for a puppy and grown dog.

You keep the dog in the crate over night. First thing in the morning (or earlier if it is a young puppy) you let it out to do the business. Give it praise and a reward if it goes outside (or in a designated area such is on paper). You can do this when you are away during the day, but it is important not to leave it longer than practical. There are guidlines on this, but I think something like an hour per month of age up until 8 hrs if memory serves correct. Otherwise, if you have a puppy and will be gone longer, use a kitchen or basement with papers, etc. I'm sure there are plenty of good on line resources. My dog is now trained so I've forgotten a lot.
