My first reaction is to say that I do not like the new forums. How do you tell which threads have
unread posts in them? How do I know if someone has responded to one of my posts? I was quite
comfortable with the old system, I thought it worked fine. You could see at a glance which threads
had new posts in them and who they were from. The new threads seem like a series of disjointed
posts. How can you tell who is responding to what unless they take the trouble to include a portion
of the previous post in theirs? Perhaps I just haven't spent enough time aquainting myself with the
new system, but on first glance it does not seem like much of an improvement.
Must admit I am not doing so well with reading posts in the new
format as well.
The "hide" button (recently replaced) seemed to work as an
alternative to mark "read" posts. What seemed as a natural follow-on
is that the "hidden" threads would collapse and could be brought back
if desired. Then a count at the thread level would tell you how many
posts had not been read.
The hierarchy in the old format was usefull as well (meaning
indentation of posts). It is not intuitive to me as to when one chain of
thought as ended and another has begun within the same overall
thread.
One the positive side, I really like the individual message format
itself, the personal information (add rating), the avatars, and the 🙂
smiley stuff 🙂 !

I made a little mistake with the "hide" button. I noticed that you had
used it as a way of managing read posts!!!
This button was a way for moderators, like yourself, to remove
offensive posts...
When I logged on this morning and noticed that you had "hidden" 117
posts I realised my mistake in not making this clear!!!
You are right. We need to implement a way of making it clear which
posts have been read. All posts are in order of "posted time" so it
should just be a matter of reading each thread from the point at which
you left off.
I am working on a solution to this, so that we can show the number
of "unread posts" next to the thread name, so you needn't read
threads that contain only posts you have already read.
Our apologies while we iron out the teething problems with the new
format, but I feel confident that it will become loved once we address
these issues....

Thanks.
It will take a while for some to adapt to the new forum style, but I feel
very confident that most people will look back at the old style as being
inferior. We received so many requests for an update to the forums
and we spent a long time figuring out the best way to approach it.
This is our first-pass attempt, and we will continue to improve them
based on any suggestions we receive...

Hey Chris
I has no idea! Sorry to cause some further work but it simply never
dawned on me (maybe I missed some posts explaining this). Glad
you caught this in time and look forward to the next version update.
