if you don't believe in helping inmates out with requests relating to the criminal scene in your country.

I've got a request at one of the prison libraries I serve from a female prisoner who wants information about the New Zealand mafia, and unfortunately I'm right out of luck because she's short on details and the only thing I have to work on is in all probability inaccurate: she thinks the organized crime clans in New Zealand are known collectively as the "Pruni" (I've trawled the usual places and this produces nothing), but she knows nothing of the crime families there or notable scandals which would enable me to serve her with internet data. There's certainly no bibliographical information to go on which would help out. Anyway, if any obliging Kiwis with no objection to serving recreational requests like this are able to give me a heads-up, I'd be extremely grateful to you.

There aren't any significant crime families in New Zealand.

Why don't you leave this one for Amnesty.

Well, she is vague and no doubt incorrect on detail, but I don't think that's quite right - her boyfriend is from New Zealand, and he's apparently connected to one of them.

This is at least a start.

PPS: Actually, never mind, I'm finding what I need now.

Apparently there are 4000-11000 members. It looks like there are significant crime factions in New Zealand, after all.

Isn't that a sizeable % of the entire adult population of NZ?

Yes, apparently that's just about everyone. Apparently they ride around on mopeds demonstratively committing non-ovine-related criminal acts.

Maybe Bowmann is a mob boss and just doesn't want to admit it.
They car bomb you if you make too many spelling errors...

The first article is about various gangs (not crime families just gangs) in New Zealand. The second was written in 1996 by someone who doesn't live in New Zealand and is a load of crap.

Perhaps, but I've already said that it's information on organized crime in New Zealand I'm interested in, not just crime families.

Unless you're more specific about why the second site is inaccurate, I can only say that while the link is nearly a decade old, the impression it creates is supported by the content I'm finding on the sites of various New Zealand dailies and periodicals. Evidently gang violence is a media issue there, irrespective of whether it is or is not a genuine problem.

I've never heard of any of the gangs it mentions whereas everyone here will know of The Mongrel Mob and Black Power and Highway 66.

Shootings are rare here, so much so that every one will recieve news coverage and yet according to the article drive-by shootings were (are?) occuring all the time.

The media here does indeed play up the gang angle (you can't watch the news for five minutes without hearing about "P Gangs corrupting our youth" ) but the reality is far from this.

Thanks, Xanthos, much appreciated. There aren't too many alternatives, however, so I'm going to give her a few sources and let her choose which she believes. I'm also wondering if this apparently erroneous "Pruni" (I think her boyfriend is of Maori extraction, so whether this is a meaningful word or complete cobblers is beyond my ken) term may just be a misunderstanding based on the phrase "P Gang".

is it a parole violation in UK to associate with NZ mafia?
