The format changed to two-part 45 mintue stories in the Colin Baker era. It doesn't really work that well, this time they've gone for mainly one-part 45 mins, which means there's little time to develop much of storyline, but there's no cliff-hangers or recaps to pad out the episodes either.
I don't think the show was ever aimed specifically at kids, it was made by the BBC Drama department and intended as a family show. I wonder if they should have just hit the ground running with a space set story and not made Billie Piper's character an irritating suburbanite. The scene where she surfs the net to look up the "Doctor" made me cringe!

I was a little bit disappointed after all the hype, but at least, true to form, the special effects are still sub par - and it wouldn't be Doctor Who if they weren’t, right?
Burping wheelie bin made be chuckle, anyway.

Personally I'll be disappointed if the special effects are too good. I mean - it's Dr Who, right?
