I had one chess related dream when I was very ill before my
girlfriend (now ex sadly) was due to come to my home over Easter for
the first time (we met at university). I wanted more than anything not
to be unwell the next day.
The night before she was due to come I dreamt that I (as white) was
playing chess against my illness (as black). It really, really felt that
sitting on the other side of the board was my illness.
Black had only his king left. I had pieces swarming all over the black
king but just couldn't find the right combination to mate. Repeatedly
black wriggled free no matter what I did. It felt like the illness was
winning and there would be a perpetual struggle. All this in a dream.
As vivid a dream as I've ever had. Finally though I managed to
checkmate and defeat black and the illness (or so I dreamt).
I woke up the next day feeling fine with little or no hint of illness and
shared with her some of the most wonderful moments that I've ever
had in my life.
I've dreamt of chess (positions, moves) on other occasions but never
as vividly.

The Squirrel Lover
you see, Mark, who needs mathematics, when you can cure yourself like that. Looking more deeply into the dream itself, the
breakthrough must have been when you thought that the illness was even winning - a king only. That was a daring challenge of
the logic of the game, an advanced form of creativity. The underlying motivator was the driving force: your girlfriend. Now back
to mathematics and logic: this technique is very powerful when you are stuck in a reasoning. Go back a few steps, and reverse
the logical outcome of one earlier step, and reason from there. Pure nonsens you wil get, but probably also an insight in the
problem that may help you to find the solution. Don't forget to go back to the 'logical' sequence, though. Did I do that here ...
not sure. Gil.
