Yo yo yo, that be a real good question! Mad props on bringin' it up, cuz I'm feelin' like speakin' my piece on it, know what I'm sayin'? It's like this. I got one of tha sharpest minds up on this whole site, but foolz always be trippin' 'bout my language when I post, like they can't be understandin' it, ya feel? But it ain't even mean I'm slow or that I can't read and write. That just be my real pimpin' comin' out in words, fo' real. So yo, it ain't even no sign of limited intelligence or nothin' like that. Fo' some people, that' just how they be keepin' real, so it ain't even no big deal, ya feel?

Ya heard tha word.

Actually, there is another option: sign of not communicating appropriately! 🙂

I have a son who is an English lecturer. We have often discussed the way language is changing - SMSs and e-mail have brought all kinds of new words, don't U agree?

Strangely (for me!) enough, he doesn't seem to care. He says that a language is a living, not static, entity. Some of the colourful language we have seen on this thread may well be taken up in the Oxford English Dictionary at some stage in the not too distant future!

My concern is only for clarity of communication. For example:

My pops wuz an accountant, I don't even think he know how to use a letta opena right, know what I'm sayin'. He wuz an AP biatch anyway, I think.

The above from Cribs may well communicate to the groups it is aimed at, but I have to admit to a slight confusion as to the detail. 😀😀

The point I am making is that in casual, informal conversations it is quite acceptable to use slang and "incorrect" grammar. But as soon as you want to communicate seriously, be it from a platform verbally or in a written publication, correct use of grammar is critical. If I open a technical website and find spelling or grammar mistakes, it immediately tells me that the owners do NOT pay attention to detail and are NOT interested in quality. I then take my business elsewhere, because how do I know they will not treat me in the same way?!

So, in summary, grammar and punctuation are important and necessary only in the context of which the communication is made. With your buddies, you would sound funny if you did NOT talk like they did!

In peace

Below is the summary of a grant proposal I have received - I kid you not. I have made NO changes.

Do you think that this shows that grammar and spelling IS important? 😀

If this person had taken only a little more trouble, it would have been a great proposal!

(I hope this candidate does not play chess! 🙂 )

Background
I am living with a hearing disabled person who made a big success of her life. Considering the fact that she is 100% death, and looking what she have achieved, I think she can be a roll model for everybody. She is currently busy with a Phd with the literacy of disabled people as research topic. Helping her with small parts of her thesis caused me to be interested in the same topic.

Topic
With the senses data I want to look at the people with disabilities, considering the education, employment, salary, etc to see if the person made a success of his/her life… living a normal-as-possible life.
