morning dew? ...

sometimes the power on our house would go out ... it was around 20 years old then. called the power company, they sent their people out, they checked out the breaker box (outside), sprayed some stuff on in the contacts (they called it "pookie" but that was probly their pet name for contact cleaner), and it worked after that.

worth a thought but it has been a while since I have seen dew also the pattern points to someone or something that occures at set times.

I appretiate any input

the alarm didn't catch anyone so i'd look at natural causes.

maybe the power company would send someone out for free, if the problem is in the meter box on or their side of the box. my problem was probably on the connection to the grounding rod. they didn't charge anything.

I read that faulty grounding of a neighboring house with an affected appliance can periodically reduce the overall ground impetance causing a GLCB to have fits of nuisance trips. My suggestion is to look for the pattern causing input outside of your property.

Following a process of elimination is always the best place to start.

You say that it is the ring main that is being affected.

If it is your earth trip switch (or RCCD) then it would just flip that switch leaving all the others (which are MCB's) in the on position. You wouldn't be able to tell if it was a ring main from this information unless the MCB for the ring main had also tripped off as well, is this the case?

How do you know it is the ring main that has the trouble?

If this was my problem, I would try and narrow it down a bit.

In order for somebody to trip your consumer unit, they would either need entry to the house or tamper with a device external to the house.

It would be more likely for them to tamper with something outside the house.
In order to cause a trip current, they would need to short the internal workings of a device, either by unscrewing an external case or by forcing a liquid into it, a bit of an examination of all your external devices would expose this.

The most likely cause of your problems is a faulty piece of equipment plugged into the mains,or a bit of dodgy DIY involving a nail or screw hitting a cable.

The only way you are going to find out what is causing this is to remove every piece of equipment from each socket in every room and wait two weeks to see if it stops.
If after two weeks the problem has gone, plug one piece of equipment back in at a time and wait a further two weeks until the problem returns.

Or, pay one of my colleagues a few quid and it will get sorted in an hour or two.
Knowledge is money.

I have to pay somebody to paint my house.

you are quite correct and that is what I shall do.I suppose that our households collective conviction (that this is deliberate ) has prevented me from giving someone ( the harrasser ) the pleasure of pushing me to spend money on it.It has become somewhat of a game.

Thank you
Jim Mc

P.s the pattern STILL points to someone doing it. A random accurance is not likely mon + thurs then all but mon + thur

When you get it sorted, I would be very interested to know what it was.

It has to be a device on a timer orientated circuit like central heating, or perhaps an activity that is only performed by a member of the household during that time.

Cheers.

Could it be caused by a heating element gone bad in a water heater?
