When I was starting a EverQuest account a few years ago I was asked if I wanted a private server. What was EverQuest offering with a private server?

That's EQ2. EQ is an old product and they're probably trying to get private individuals to take up the costs of their servers now that the game is outdated.

I am asking about something that is dated about the time the Ruins of Kunark came out.
Edit: What exactly were you offered? Who offered it to you? There was never any mention made to me of any private servers.

I started playing EQ shortly after Ruins of Kunark came out, and I played for 4 years and quit in 2004, so that must have been sometime in 2000. I don't think they had any special servers at that time and definitely no private servers like talked about above (not that I know of anyways).
