They're called 'Philosphers' and are now sadly illegal in Britain, however a few years ago they weren't. They are Psychotropic Mushrooms and are a really surreal experience. I used to just giggle for hours on end and basically have a laugh.

There are actually lots of very unusual mushrooms in Japan, although shiitake are the most well-known.
Junsai are green and slimey and really difficult to pick up; so much so that the word also describes politicians who are difficult to pin down...
Shimeji are bigger, but still slimey.
Enokidake are long thin white stringey ones;

But they all taste like snot. European types like boletus cep are much better. One of the reasons I'm going to Poland in September is for the mushrooms...
